Opportunity Class at Glenbrook Public School

At Glenbrook Public School, we are part of the Opportunity Class (OC) program. Glenbrook Public School has proudly hosted an OC since the 1990s. We have 30 students who are placed into our program every second year, with alternate years being hosted by Blaxland East Public School. Our next intake is Year 5, 2026. Admission is via a test.

Opportunity Classes cater for high potential and intellectually gifted students in Years 5 and 6. High potential and gifted students who would benefit most from enrolment in OCs are those who have superior academic ability which is matched by very high classroom performance. The OC program runs for two years, with successful students attending the OC full-time for the duration of the program.

Our OC students:
  • work and think creatively and critically
  • question why things are as they are
  • are inspired
  • are challenged and to challenge thinking
  • experience success
Our students:
  • learn at an advanced rate
  • work and share ideas and solutions with peers
  • work on complex tasks finding creative solutions to problems
Our students experience:
  • extension activities designed to deepen student's understanding of themes and concepts
  • a range of teaching and learning strategies
  • accelerated learning designed to optimise the impact of teaching
  • open ended activities
  • testing of ideas, researching and group tasks

We grow and learn as a team

Our OC students tell us that they experience a connection with like-minded students in an OC class and that this creates a sense of belonging, which can be a transformational educational experience for our students. They tell us that they love learning with other students who, like them, enjoy asking questions, delving into topics, and being challenged academically.

At Glenbrook Public School we prioritise the happy integration of all students. Getting to know you activities are planned in the early days, to encourage the development of friendships and to help everyone feel at home and welcome at their new school.

We belong to Glenbrook Public School

While students in Opportunity Classes are selected based on their ability in the intellectual domain, we know that OC students often display high potential in the other domains (creative, social-emotional, and physical). As such, while the primary focus of the OC program is academic, students are also offered talent development opportunities across all domains of potential.

Students in the OC also participate fully in the life of Glenbrook Public School. This includes whole school programs such as peer support, kindy buddy mentors, assemblies, sport and school camps.
